Haitian Heritage Month

Hello Everyone,

May is the Haitian Heritage Month. We celebrate our flag day on May 18th hence we celebrate all May long our beautiful culture. Throughout the month of May, Haitians in different states will celebrate with various activities showcasing our culture. Here’s a little history about Haiti. Haiti, the very first black nation to get its independence. We were enslaved by the French and François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture led the rebellion against French in 1791. Even though he died before our victory, Dessalines Jean-Jacques continued the fight and on November 18, 1803 we did not only successfully ended slavery but the French control over our country. We fought one of the best military force yet we won. The very first flag was sewed by the beautiful woman Catherine Flon. Before we gained our independence, she sewed our flag on May 18th, 1803. This month we celebrate our ancestors who had all the odds against them yet were determined to end slavery. We celebrate their courage and their bravery. Our ancestors truly believe in freedom for all, they have helped South American countries and US to gain Louisiana territory. Everyone is welcome to celebrate with us. I would be visiting the Haitian Heritage Museum in Miami.

We have dared to be free. Let us dare to be so by ourselves and for ourselves.” -- Jean-Jacques Dessalines .

"In overthrowing me, you have cut in Saint Domingue only the trunk of the tree of liberty.”It will spring up again by the roots for they are numerous and deep." Toussaint Louvertue
